Results and reports [draft]
NAP sample assessments are reported in national reports and technical reports. There are 2 important elements to how these results are reported: the scale and the performance standard.
The national report provides an overview of student performance against the relevant standards. The report includes an analysis of various findings across states and territories and student sub-groups, for example: the relative achievements of boys/girls; metropolitan students/rural students and Indigenous/non-Indigenous students.
A technical report is also released, which provides detailed information about the statistical and measurement methods and procedures used. This enables valid interpretations and transparent evaluations of the reported outcomes.
Individual student reports are not provided for NAP sample assessments. Participating schools receive a basic report about the performance of their students.
NAP sample assessments are not pass/fail tests.
NAP sample assessment scales and proficiency standards
Scales
One of the main objectives of the National Assessment Program is to monitor trends in performance over time. In order to do this, proficiency scales have been developed for each of the sample assessment domains. The same score on the scale represents the same level of achievement over time. The proficiency scales are not comparable between domains, and each is divided into 5 to 7 proficiency levels.
More information on the proficiency scales for each of the sample assessment domains is available in the NAP sample assessment public reports.
Proficiency standards
Achievement in the NAP sample assessments is measured against nationally agreed proficiency scales, each of which has a number of defined levels.
For each of the 3 sample assessments, a proficiency standard is also defined. See the proficiency level descriptions and proficiency standards for science literacy, ICT literacy and civics and citizenship.

NAP sample assessments national reports
NAP sample public reports provide a national comparison of student performance against the relevant framework. A technical report is also released, which provides detailed information about the conduct of the NAP sample subject so that valid interpretations of the relevant results can be made, and future NAP sample assessment cycles can be undertaken, and linked with, appropriate information from past NAP sample assessments.
